What it is

The Chinese Government Scholarship is managed by the China Scholarship Council (CSC). Many countries first choose their nominees through a ministry or the Chinese embassy, and then those nominees apply on the CSC online portal.

What we know, and what we do not know

We read Kenya's Ministry of Education notice for the 2026/27 intake as an example of how the process works. Tanzania's process and dates may be different. Please treat the Kenyan details below as an example, not as Tanzania's rules.

From the Kenyan notice:

  • Bachelor's applicants should be 25 or under, with strong grades in the subjects they want to study.
  • For Chinese-taught programmes you need HSK Level 3. Programmes taught in English may ask for IELTS or TOEFL.
  • Bachelor's applicants must take the CSCA test and submit the score report.
  • Apply on the CSC portal (campuschina.org), choose the programme type shown in the notice, and also submit documents to the national ministry.
  • Nominated candidates then face a written exam and an interview organised by the Chinese Embassy.

What to do for Tanzania

  1. Ask the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and the Chinese Embassy in Dar es Salaam how Tanzanian students apply and when.
  2. Look at the official CSC site for programme lists: https://www.campuschina.org/
  3. Find out now whether you need HSK or the CSCA test, because tests have fixed dates and registration deadlines.

Careful: the scholarship application does not need an agent. Some "agents" charge heavy fees for work you can do yourself. See how to spot scams.
