This one is time-sensitive. The 2027 round has already started. Contact the Korean Embassy in Tanzania as soon as you can to ask about the deadline and which countries are eligible.
What it is
The Global Korea Scholarship for Undergraduates (GKS-U) is run by Korea's National Institute for International Education (NIIED). It pays for a bachelor's degree in Korea, starting with a year of Korean language study.
Two ways to apply
According to a September 2026 report in the Korea JoongAng Daily:
- Embassy track. You apply through the Korean embassy in your country, for bachelor's programmes. You choose up to three universities, and at least one must be a regional ("Type B") university.
- University track. You apply directly to one university and one department. The programmes are for science and engineering (the University Industry Cooperation programme, open to applicants from all countries) and a small associate-degree programme.
Who can apply
- Under 25, meaning born after 1 March 2002.
- Graduated or expected to graduate from high school.
- Your parents must not hold Korean citizenship, and you must not hold it either.
- Graduates of Korean high schools, past GKS scholars and past recipients of a Korean government degree scholarship cannot apply.
- Grades must be given on an accepted scale, or you must provide an official explanation and a converted grade.
What it covers
Tuition, the Korean language programme fee, return airfare and a monthly allowance. The report quotes about 14.4 million won a year during the degree. This allowance covers living costs, housing, health insurance and a settlement allowance.
What to do this week
- Email or call the Korean Embassy in Tanzania and ask: "Is Tanzania eligible for GKS-U 2027, and what is the embassy deadline?"
- If the embassy track has closed, check the university track on each university's website.
- Start collecting your certificates, transcripts and recommendation letters.
