The most important point

You cannot apply to the Mastercard Foundation directly. The Foundation says it does not accept direct applications. You apply through one of its partner universities or partner organisations.

What it covers

According to the Foundation's application page: tuition, accommodation, books and academic materials, and a return flight to your home country if needed. It also offers mentoring, counselling, leadership development and academic support.

Who it is for

The programme is for highly talented, service-oriented young people, especially those from underrepresented backgrounds. It covers secondary school, undergraduate and master's study. It is very competitive.

How to apply

  1. Open the Foundation's "Where to apply" page and read the list of partner universities: https://mastercardfdn.org/apply
  2. Choose partners that offer your course. Many are in Africa, and some offer programmes without needing SAT or TOEFL scores.
  3. Go to that university's own scholars programme page for deadlines, fees and forms. Each partner is different.
  4. You can apply to more than one partner. Being admitted does not guarantee a scholarship.

Fees and scams: some partners charge an application fee, which is refunded if you are selected. The Foundation says it never asks individuals for payment. Pay only on the university's official website, never to a person.

Tip

Because these programmes look for service and leadership, your personal statement should include real examples of how you helped others.
